The Williams College Museum of Art seeks 6-7 interns for the summer of 2012. These are all paid internships. Note that in accordance with College policy, precedence will be given to students currently receiving financial aid and all internships will be offered to students at the college. Student Museum Associates are also given preference. All WCMA interns are asked to work on July 4th as part of a town-wide celebration. Several interns will be called upon to give guided tours of the museum’s summer exhibitions (training to be provided as needed.)

Each student reports directly to one of the Museum’s staff members. While internships have an educational focus, occasional office support is expected during staff vacation times.

Summer positions at WCMA last for 8 – 12 weeks during the 15-week period between the end of the spring semester and the start of the next academic year. Exact beginning and end dates are negotiable. The work week is 35 hours.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:

Education Interns:

TWO positions are available to assist the Education department and work with Cynthia Way, Director of Education and Visitor Experience, and Joann Harnden, Coordinator of Education Programs. The Education department designs interpretative programming and materials to make WCMA exhibitions and museum resources accessible to diverse audiences. Activities include school programs, teachers’ workshops, family programs, public programs, and the production of interpretative material. Interns will work on all aspects of programming—such as conducting research on exhibitions and collections; writing interpretative material; planning and implementing programs; and teaching and sharing their passion for art with college students, K-12 students, teachers, and adult audiences. An interest in exploring uses of technology in the galleries is desired.

Curatorial Intern(s):

ONE TO TWO positions available. Working closely with Curator of Special Projects Katie Price and Interim Assistant Curator Miriam Stanton, curatorial intern(s) will concentrate on researching WCMA’s collection, preparing future special exhibitions, and producing project archives. Duties will include researching and organizing material related to collection objects; researching in the Clark Art Institute library; updating object files with documentation found during research; preparing checklists and images for exhibitions; scanning; sorting and distilling project files to be archived; and other duties as needed. Attention to detail, excellent research and organizational skills, and an ability to work independently are critical.

Public Relations/Registrarial Interns:

TWO positions are available. This intern team will work closely with Rachel Tassone, the Associate Registrar and Kim Hugo, the Public Relations Coordinator. Duties will include organizing registrarial, curatorial, and public relations files to be archived and also helping to reorganize and maintain the museum’s mailing database. Applicants should have a strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.

Preparator’s Intern:

ONE position available. The candidate for this position will be working directly for Hideyo Okamura, Exhibition Designer and Chief Preparator, on day-to-day gallery operations. He/she would be involved in working closely with the art handlers and learning all aspects of installation, art preparation, lighting design, and exhibition layout.

To be considered for a WCMA summer position, please apply via e-mail to Amy Tatro, Assistant to the Director (amy.m.tatro@williams.edu) stating your interests as they relate to art and museum work, with a local reference listed. Review of resumes will begin April 23. Decisions will be made as soon as possible thereafter. Please call Amy Tatro (x3055) if you have any questions.
