Unemployment Fraudulent Claims FAQs

As a follow up to the November 17th campus memo regarding Unemployment Fraudulent Claims.

• What do I need to do if a claim was filed in my name?

  Fill out the state Fraud Reporting Form immediately 

• What personal information was used to file false claims?

  Massachusetts notes what is required to file an unemployment claim

• How does the college learn about fraudulent claims?

  HR staff scans the claims daily and notifies any employees immediately.

• What information does the unemployment claims contain?

  The claim includes the individual’s name, social security number, date submitted, start and end dates for work, and the reason for separation.  

• Was Williams' personally identifiable information compromised?

  The college has not experienced any data breaches.

  A recent FBI Press Release indicated that the information used to file these false claims is likely from previous commercial data breaches. It is speculated that this may have been precipitated by large breaches like the one involving Equifax

• What else do I need to do after reporting the fraud to DUA (and please make sure you do that immediately)?
  • Monitor your credit reports. Due to the pandemic, you can now generate them for free weekly
  • Place a fraud alert on your credit reports
  • Consider freezing your credit reports to make it harder for scammers to open accounts in your name
  • You can report this to the FTC and generate a personal recovery plan
